The VOB file extension is a Video Object file, commonly used in DVD Video media. Its purpose is to act as a container for video, audio and subtitle files, which are then stored and sorted on the DVD for playback. The playback, or streaming, is determined by the order of the VOB files. These are commonly seen on DVDs themselves as the chapters in a movie. Since the VOB file format is a container file, each one can hold several different yet related video, audio and subtitle files. This allows for features on a DVD such as multiple languages for both dubbing and captions, multiple camera angles of the same scene, embedded pictures and storyboards and commentary tracks. Also within a VOB file is the information needed to ensure all the different parts contained within mesh correctly. When divided into chapters, it is this information that lets the playback appear seamless.

I have to admit I'm no computer geek. When something goes wrong, I usually have to call someone to fix it and it costs me a lot of money. When my computer started to experience random freezes, I just used Regtask and now it works normally again.

My computer is 5 years old and runs extremely slow now. I was a bit sceptical about using Regtask, but just decided to give it a shot in the end and it worked out fantastically for me.

Since all the necessary information for playback is stored in one or more VOB files, many standalone digital media player programs can read the stored information and play it back as if it were a DVD, since part of their function is to play the digital video discs they came from. Some such programs include VLC media player, Media Player Classic, MPlayer and ALLPlayer. Other, more specialized media player programs will not recognize the VOB file format, even though it contains all the data it could otherwise read. In cases such as these, the VOB file will need to be converted into a format that the reader can recognize, such as AVI or MPG. Several conversion programs, such as WinAVI, exist that will automatically convert VOB files to other file extension as well as converting them into VOB files for the purpose of making DVDs.

More Info Regarding File Extension Vob
Depending on this compatibility, the media player program may or may not automatically associate the VOB file extension with it, allowing for payback simply by clicking on the file itself. The VOB files can also be opened from within the programs and most programs also have a playlist function with drag and drop functions. In regard to function, if a VOB file contains extra features listed above, they may not be available when used in a media player program if said program does not support use of those features.
The most common problem that will be encountered with VOB files is that of data corruption. When any file is copied from one location to another, there is always a possibility that data will be lost or damaged in the transfer. If the video data within a VOB file is corrupted, the most common result is distortion of the video. This could be pixelation, color bleeding and loss and/or unreadable portions of the video that get skipped over or cause the program to crash altogether. The same holds true for audio and subtitle data, resulting in garbled, clipped or out of sync audio and unreadable text. If the VOB file has been damaged enough, the media player might not play it at all, causing an error message to appear and shutting down. It is recommended that a new copy of the original VOB file be obtained in such an event.
It is very rare that a VOB file will contain a virus, but since it is a container file, the possibility exists. Since there is no standard size for a VOB file (except for a one gigabyte limit for compatibility with computer operating systems), determining if a virus has been added by examining the file size is impossible. Most VOB files are copied directly from DVDs, and so they are safe. The largest threat of a virus does not come from the VOB file but from the digital media player programs. It is easy for a third party to add a virus to a distributed program, since viruses are usually small and the programs contain many smaller files with names and extensions not easily recognizable to most users. Whenever possible, get a media player program from the creators themselves. Some companies use other websites to host their programs. If this is the case, the safest thing to do is only follow direct links from the program's website.
